What to Wear for Commercial and Theatrical Auditions

Wardrobe & Makeup Essentials

When you're going out for auditions, it is so important that you dress for the role that you are auditioning for. You want the casting directors to be able to easily picture you in that role.

Makeup is key! Everyone, including men, are expected to apply makeup before going out on an audition. You should keep a longwearing foundation, under eye concealer, powder, and a nude lip tint in your bag so that you will always look camera-ready.

Makeup is essential in your photos and on camera. It's important that you appear fresh and confident on camera. You'll want to apply under eye concealer, foundation, powder, and a lip tint at the very least so that you won't look washed out under all the studio lights.

Remember that lighter colors will highlight and accentuate features, so apply a lighter shade to the places you want to draw attention to. Darker colors will contour and create a shadow, so apply a darker shade to features you want to make appear smaller.

Wardrobe Essentials

When you're going out for auditions, it is so important that you dress for the role that you are auditioning for. You want the casting directors to be able to easily picture you in that role.

Since auditions can pop up last minute, we recommend that our talents have an audition bag with preselected outfits and makeup for touch ups ready at all times. It is best if you have one fitness outfit with clean tennis shoes and one trendy casual outfit ready to go for any last-minute auditions.

While workout outfits are pretty straight forward, you can get creative with your casual wear outfit. Plan something that appeals to your personal style. It can be classic and traditional, sporty, creative, or edgy and urban. Just make sure that there are no wrinkles and that your overall look conveys confidence and authenticity.

For our mature talents, we recommend that you have a button-down cardigan and thin sweater on hand. You should also have a sports coat or blazer to pair with nice jeans or pants. You should also have a white long sleeve button-down to pair with your jeans and suits.

You can also prepare outfits based on common roles.

Roles that call for a smarter look (Mom/Dad, Professor, IT, Blue Collar, Business Professionals) will have you dress in similar clothing. A nice button-down top and blazer would do the trick. Roles that are athletic (Outdoorsy Characters, and Fitness Instructors) would call for a workout outfit and clean shoes. Roles that are more edgy and creative (skateboarder, stuntman, and motorcyclist) would have you wear something more fitted and incorporate a leather jacket.
